Highlights of the 6th Summer Opera Theatre Festival in Varna
Ambitious premieres and partnerships, renowned soloists, the first International Ballet forum dedicated to Maya Plisetskaya and much more awaiting the audience of the 6th edition of the festival Summer Opera Theatre in Varna
In keeping with the tradition, during the sixth edition of the Summer Opera Theatre (July 3 – August 25 2015) the team of Varna State Opera Theatre (part of TMPC-Varna) offers opera lovers both rarely performed premiere titles and titles for the general public, along with the performances of famous Bulgarian and foreign soloists.
Two ballets: Carmen Dance & Romeo and Juliet
The news this year is that the Summer Opera Theater 2015 will include also the first International Ballet forum dedicated to the great ballet prima Maya Plisetskaya. The concept is for a Biennale that will satisfy the interest of the audience to ballet. The idea came from the chief choreographer of the State Opera of Varna and longtime partner on stage Maya Plisetskaya, Sergei Bobrov.
The audience will have the unique opportunity to see two of his performances, created in co-production between the Siberian State Ballet and Ballet State Opera in Varna – the award-winning Carmen Dance (July 27 2015) and the premiere of the famous ballet to music by Sergei Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet (29 July 2015).
Stars of the Italian bel canto
On 29 June 2015 in Hall 1 of the FCC will take place the performance Stars of the Italian bel canto. The musical event will meet the audience with famous names from the world stages among which the recognized best in the world Verdi bass Carlo Colombara and the soprano Daria Masierol.
The first premiere in the sixth edition of the Summer Opera Theatre will be The Csardas Princess by Emmerich Kalman (July 3 2015). The audience will hear Boris Lukov and Veselin Vachev along with the best soloists of the State Opera in Varna in the soprano parties.
On 9 July 2015 follows the premiere of Verdi’s masterpiece Macbeth – a co-production with the National Opera of Plovdiv, staged by the director Nina Naydenova and permanent guest conductor of the National Opera of Varna from Italy – Stefano Segedoni. The event will be with the participation of the prima of the Romanian National Opera Sorina Munteanu in the role of Lady Macbeth together with the great soloists Venceslas Atanasov, Plamen Dimitrov and Valery Georgiev.
On July 17 2015 the audience will meet the inspiring art of Carlo Colombara, when, under the baton of the chief conductor of the National Opera of Varna – Svetoslav Borisov, he will perform the role of King Philip in Don Carlos by Verdi in the stellar company Kaludi Kaludov as Don Carlos and the soloist of the Bolshoi Theatre Irina Dolzhenko as Queen Elizabeth.
The second premiere within the Opera in the Summer Theatre Festival and the International Music Festival “Varna Summer” will take place on July 21 2015. This will be the beautiful and difficult opera Adriana Lecouvreur by Francesco Cilea. The current premiere staging is a co-production of Varna State Opera and the Macedonian Opera and Ballet in Skopje directed by Dejan Proshev and conducted by Viliana Vulcheva. Among the soloists are the names of the renowned Bulgarian opera singers Tsvetelina Vassileva, Ivan Momirov and Daniela Dyakova.
The elegant L’elisir D’Amore by Gaetano Donizetti will take place on July 31 2015, as a co-production between the state opera theaters of Varna and Plovdiv, conducted by Svetoslav Borisov, and directed by Nina Naydenova. The performng soloists are Mark Fowler (Australia), Dejan Vachkov Svilen Nikolov and others.
The performance of Turandot by Giacomo Puccini, right before Varna’s City Day, on August 14 2015, is dedicated to the 60th anniversary of Boyko Tsvetanov. Under the baton of Gregory Palikarov, the world famous tenor will partner with the wonderful soloist of the Sofia Opera and Ballet – Gabriela Georgieva, who has recently returned from the Metropolitan Opera, where she duplicate Anna Netrebko in her dramatic soprano roles.
On August 18 2015 Maestro Borislav Ivanov, the artistic director of the State Opera of Varna, will conduct one of his favorite operas –Verdi’s Aida. The artists in this opera are superb solo composition – one of the most popular contemporary tenors Kamen Chanev and the soloist of the Bolshoi Theatre Agunda Kulaeva.
On August 20 2015, the premiere for this year Don Pasquale by Gaetano Donizetti (a director’s reading of Kuzman Popov) will be staged for the first time in the Summer Opera Theatre. In this co-production between Varna State Opera and Teatro Comunale di Modena, with conductor Svetoslav Borisov, along with Dejan Vachkov Irina Zhekova and Svilen Nikolov, the audience will hear the artistic Russian tenor Alexey Tatarintsev.
The sixth edition of the festival Opera in the Summer Theatre will traditionally close with Opera Gala. The concert on 25 August will feature the interpretative art of three soloists of the State Opera of Varna and three guests from the operas in Istanbul and Ankara.
