History of the opera
Stara Zagora is a city of old musical traditions, which date back to the 19th century, when in 1897, the music society “Kaval” was created. It comprised male and female choirs, soloists and instrumentalists, who were the first to present opera excerpts in the city. The first opera performance, “Gergana” by Maestro Atanassov, was staged in 1925, and this marked the foundation of the Opera of Stara Zagora. In April 1927, Stara Zagora Opera enthusiasts arranged and performed the opera “Il Trovatore” by Giuseppe Verdi, and later in December appears the performance “Barber of Seville” by Gioacchino Rossini.
In present days, the State Opera of Stara Zagora annually present four premieres, and maintains a repertoire of 15, comprising a wide range of classical music performances.
